Why balloons fly at sunrise

Calm air, cool temperatures and the best light: the science behind the early start.

Balloons being inflated in the blue pre-dawn light, burners glowing orange, crews moving around.

Every guest asks why we start so early. The answer is the air.

Calm before the sun

As the sun heats the ground, it stirs up wind and thermals. The first two hours after sunrise are the calmest of the day.

Cool air lifts better

A balloon flies because the air inside is warmer than the air outside. Cool mornings mean more lift and gentler flying.
