What to wear for a balloon flight

Layers, closed shoes and a hat: how to dress for a desert sunrise at three thousand feet.

A fleece, a beanie, hiking shoes, a camera and a thermos laid out on a bench at dawn, red rocks behind.

A desert sunrise starts cold and warms up fast. Dress in layers you can take off.

Closed-toe shoes

We land in fields, sometimes rough ones. Sneakers or hiking shoes are perfect.

A hat, not a scarf

The burner is warm overhead; a cap keeps the heat off. Loose scarves stay on the ground.
